Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes his former mentor Pep Guardiola needs to rediscover his “ruthless” edge to save Manchester City’s season.

Guardiola’s side are enduring their worst spell under the Spaniard, trailing leaders Liverpool by nine points and struggling in the Champions League.

Arteta, who worked as Guardiola’s assistant at City, says the Catalan needs to make tough decisions on players and inject fresh faces into the squad.

“He needs to be ruthless and consistent,” Arteta said. “He needs to fit the club’s culture to create a winning mentality.”

Guardiola’s recent struggles have seen him drop star players like Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, while goalkeeper Ederson has been replaced by Stefan Ortega.

Arteta believes Guardiola needs to identify which players can move forward and which are nearing the end of their time at the club.

“He needs to bring in fresh faces and rejuvenate the dressing room,” Arteta added.

“The secret is that the people, the players and the staff, have to believe what they’re trying to deliver.”
