50 years ago, Joe Royle joined Manchester City as a player, leaving his boyhood club Everton. He scored 19 goals in his first full season and helped City win the League Cup. After a brief stint at Bristol City and Norwich City, Royle returned to City as manager in 1998. He led the team to promotion from the third tier to the Premier League in two seasons. Royle was sacked in 2001 but remains a popular figure among City fans.
